The math under every result

The compound interest formula, and what it does to $10,000

A = P (1 + r/n)nt
P = principal — the amount you deposit
r = nominal annual rate, written as a decimal
n = compounding periods in a year
t = the term, in years
A = balance at maturity — principal plus interest

Every calculator on this site runs that expression — the penalty, tax and ladder tools just take A and carry on from there. Nothing is estimated or rounded behind your back.

Worked example
$10,000 at 5.00% APY for 12 months, compounded daily
Step 1 — convert 5.00% APY to a daily nominal rate
r = 365 × ((1.05)1/365 − 1) = 4.8793%
Step 2 — substitute into the formula
A = 10,000 × (1 + 0.048793/365)365×1
Step 3 — the result
A = $10,500.00 → interest earned $500.00
Because 5.00% is quoted as an APY, it already contains the daily compounding — so the answer is exactly $500 no matter how often the bank compounds. That is the whole point of APY, and why it is the only figure worth comparing between banks. Quoted as a 5.00% nominal rate instead, daily compounding would pay $512.67.
Methodology & assumptions
Unless you move the compounding selector, calculators assume daily compounding with monthly crediting, a 365-day year, and interest left in the certificate for the whole term. Rates, minimum deposits, compounding basis and early-withdrawal penalties vary by institution— the figures here are illustrative samples carrying their check date, not offers. A certificate of deposit trades access for certainty: you commit money for a fixed term and the bank fixes the yield, insured by the FDIC at banks and the NCUA at credit unions up to $250,000 per depositor, per institution, per ownership category. The math is simple enough to do by hand — which is exactly why a calculator should show you the formula rather than hide it.

These tools share one calculation engine, so the interest figure on the tax calculator matches the one on the ladder builder. Each recalculates as you type, states its assumptions, and publishes the expression behind the number. Your deposit, rate and term follow you from tool to tool.

With the federal funds target at 3.50–3.75% and top certificates near 4.40% against a 1.68% national average, the gap between a good CD and an average one is worth more than most savers assume — usually several hundred dollars on a five-figure deposit.
